The winter break is over. Bleh.
While it did not feel anything like Christmas, I did enjoy the time off. I dread so much going back to school and work.
I’ve started playing The Sims 3. It’s a good way to lose oneself and I hope to relax with it on the weekends from school/work.
Alex and I went to visit his parents this weekend for his Mom’s 50th birthday. It was a surprise and a nice over-night vacation. It was cold! They also gave me a necklace for Christmas. :)
I did most of what I wanted to do this break. I packed up some of the house. I read (Footsteps in the Snow: The Red River Diary of Isobel Scott by Carol Matas, Beyond Therapy by Christopher Durang, Theatre by W. Somerset Maugham, Sex with Kings: 500 Years of Adultery, Power, Rivalry, and Revenge by Eleanor Herman, and Big Fish by Daniel Wallace), watched some movies (well, mainly Friends, but also The Thin Man, A Christmas Story, The Great Buck Howard, Doubt, The Proposal, and Swing Vote), and rested. I had wanted to work on my Wreck This Journal, but it didn’t happen.
Like I said, I’m dreading going back to school and work. The life just gets sucked out of me and I’m miserable. I lose myself in the work and cannot find an outlet to rejuvenate myself. I don’t like what I’m doing in my classes and my work frustrates me. Weekends make me sad because they are filled with homework and what little time I have for myself is rare and short. Plus, with 9:30 a.m. classes four days a week – I’ll just be exhausted. I’ll have to be in bed by 11:00 p.m., leaving only enough time for homework and dinner after classes/work.
I can simply cry. I’m so unhappy with this. I forget who I am when I’m in college and I hate that. My college experience has been horrible and I doubt I’ll look back fondly at it. I’m jealous of those who love their college years. For me, they are terrible.

I was surprised that I read less in 2009. I thought I read at least the same as in 2008. I wasn’t surprised about the movies since I mostly got through the first nine seasons of Friends on DVD. It’s funny, though, that I read and watched 12 less than last year.

It was a year ago today we put Dandi to sleep.
- Mood:depressed
It was Christmas and it didn’t feel like Christmas at all.
We watched A Christmas Story on Christmas Eve and Christmas Day, as usual. Even that didn’t bring me into the full Christmas spirit.
We spoke to my Uncle Freddy and Aunt Mae, Uncle Clyde and Aunt Joan, and Aunt Leslie. Then we opened presents. It went by really fast this year. And it was the first Christmas without Dandi and probably the last Christmas in this house. I cooked throughout the day and we played Scrabble and Sorry! I spoke with Laura in the afternoon and Alex in the evening.
For dinner we had Greek marinated chicken breasts that have been stuffed with cheeses and spinach, potato and egg casserole, green bean casserole, baked fennel casserole, and cranberry jelly. For dessert we had Pumpkin Cookie-Cake Whoopie Pies.
Here are the gifts I got ~
Mom and Dad:
- $25.00 Gasoline Gift Card
- $20.00 PetSmart Gift Card
- Pyrex: The Unauthorized Collector’s Guide by Barbara Mauzy
- Duracell Rechargeable Pre-charged Batteries and a charger
- Bar Keepers Friend
From my paternal Grandfather and his wife:
- $100.00 check
From Diana:
- a clasping wallet
- a nail filer
- a pocket mirror
- a card
From Laura:
- The Sims 3 PC game
- a card
From A.:
- an arching elephant statue (it has different-sized elephants marching in a row and they have jewels painted on them)
- two pairs of purple socks with penguins on them
- a Donald Duck mini notebook
- a hard sunglasses holder box
- a 100% blue and green silk scarf
Oh, and Hanukkah has passed. My parents gave me a scratch-off lottery card each night and I made a $1.00 from the first night’s card. Alex got me a pug poster. :)

The semester is over! I had my Drama for the Stage and Screen final on Tuesday and my Spanish I final on Wednesday. I’m really glad this semester is over. My body and brain were really shutting down. I can also focus on being an Irene Ryan partner.
In other AWESOME news: My play, Socially Acceptable, was one of the six finalists in the Short Play Competition at KCACTF! I was so shocked when I got the e-mail. And Alex is an alternate with his play A Healthy Dose of the Impossible!
I really hope to enjoy this break. And I really want to get into the holiday spirit. It’s hard to, though, with everything going on with the house and whatnot. But, I’m decorating the Christmas tree tomorrow and putting out the Menorah.
Last Saturday I took Alex out and about for his birthday celebration day. We went to the green market, the Boynton Beach Mall, a Chinese buffet for lunch, various thrift stores, and then to City Place to walk around, and then Brewzzi’s for dinner (with the staff singing Happy Birthday, of course!).
Now that I’m done fretting about the fall semester, I’m dreading the spring semester - three classes on Tuesday/Thursday at FAU and one class at PBCC on Monday/Wednesday. And it’s 9:30 a.m. four days a week! I’ll be taking Theatre History II, Sound Design, and Hitler and Nazi Germany at FAU and Elementary Spanish II at PBCC. Goody.

Since my last entry, my major to-do is the drama about getting into Spanish II for the spring at PBCC. The class day/time is full and if I don’t get in, I don’t have a job next semester, nor can I go to KCACTF. I’m worrying so much and I check the status of the class so many times a day. Even my Dad is looking, too.
I finally got a digital camera. It’s not a DSLR, but I’m OK with that for now. It’s a Nikon Coolpix L100. I’m so glad I can just take pictures and then upload them!
I have carpal tunnel syndrome, nowadays, of my left hand. I have two wrist braces: one for the all-the-time-pain and the other is for typing (which I’m not using now…). My teeth grinding has been giving me major problems and I bought a night guard, which I’ve yet to use.
Last Saturday, Alex and I went to a family Jewish brunch. There were my Grandpa, his wife, Florence, Florence’s brother, Mickey, Florence’s daughter, Andy, my Uncle Kenny and his wife Dana, and my first cousin once removed, Joy, and her husband Marty. We all had a really nice time!
Yesterday’s Thanksgiving was draining between the cooking and random bickering. Plus, I realized it was probably our last Thanksgiving in the house.
We spoke to my Grandpa and Uncle Freddy and I spoke with Laura; texts were exchanged with Linda, Zack, Geoff, Emily, Andie, Daryl, and Alex (we were not able to talk on the phone).
I watched the Macy's Thanksgiving Day Parade and made Italian marinated turkey breast, cranberry-sausage stuffing, potato and egg casserole, balsamic green beans and onions, cranberry jelly, and rolls.
And for dessert my Dad made a deep dish apple pie.

That horrid mid-term I wrote about in my previous post went better than I expected. I got a 93%. I’m still so angry with the whole situation, though.
Anyway, we’re winding down the semester. Fall semesters go so much faster for me. Spring semesters drag on and never end. Spanish all of a sudden became about “learning Spanish.” Suddenly, we have to learn real concepts. I mean, we were learning before, but now we’re dealing with entire sentences, paragraphs, and conversations. It really came out of the blue and I’m more confused about how this suddenly happened rather than the actual lessons themselves. Stage Management has involved a lot of coffee classes. That’s really all I’ll say about that. And Drama for the Stage and Screen is annoying me. I’m starting to getting pissed at myself and everyone else because I usually like what others don’t like and dislike what everyone likes.
Last weekend Alex and I had a sidewalk sale at a consignment shop. It was so draining! I sold a lot of my Dad’s tools. I made $201.50…and it all went to bills. Goody. I’m excited, though, because Alex and I are going to a huge fall garage sale at the fair grounds on Sunday! It’s been so long since I’ve been to any type of garage sale.
Josh and I have begun rehearsing our scene for KCACTF. I enjoy working on the scenes, but I’m not so thrilled about actually attending the festival.
For a lot of random information: 1) At work, I’m putting together the new A.S. degree program for the theatre department. Who know all this was involved?! 2) Java and Licky are doing well. Licky got Java’s URI, but she’s doing well. 3) I’m determined to get a digital SLR camera because I am sick and tired of film! I’ve been bidding on Nikon D40s on eBay; I will win one, gosh darn it! 4) And for whatever reason, I’m addicted to The Next Iron Chef.
Finally, Alex and I enrolled in classes at FAU for the spring semester. We’re taking Theatre History II and Sound Design for the Theatre together, and he’s taking a history class for his minor, and I’m taking Hitler and Nazi Germany for my certificate. We have to wait to enroll in Spanish II at PBCC and as of right now, the day/time we wanted is full.

I cannot believe we’re in October already. Actually, I cannot believe we’re nearly done with October already! Weren’t we all just in disbelief that September was ending and we were just starting October? How on earth did all this happen?!
And since we’re in October, we’re in mid-semester. I only had one midterm, but I had a regular Spanish test within the midterm week. My overall mid-grade for Spanish is a 97.75%. How I’ve managed that, I have no idea! Stage Management has no tests of any form and the teacher said we all have As regardless of…anything.
Today was the midterm for Drama on the Stage and Screen. And boy am I pissed. I made a nine-page study guide. Wrote down ALL the pages and quotes we talked about. Learned all the Greek terms. Learned all the director’s names and movie years. Wrote down EVERYTHING he said to study.
And then maybe three things from that study guide I made up made it on the test. Probably 36 of the 39 questions were on things we didn’t spend any time on in class. And we only had four questions about the movies, after we watched nearly four movies in their entirety and spent time talking about them in class.
And the pissy icing on the cake is that at least one questions (perhaps two…) did not have the right answers in the choices! And even after students (including Alex) went up to point this fact out, he was adamant that the correct answers were a choice. He then goes and says that if 50% of the students gets an answer wrong, he’ll eliminate the question. Nice cop out. So many students were going up to him with questions. Hopefully (but probably not) he’ll realize that his test had many errors and confusions issues.
What’s so annoying is that on top of studying on my own and with Alex, a group of the students from the class studied before the class. We studied the things he said we be tested on. And probably from the looks of the grades, the teacher will assume we didn’t do squat.
OK, onto better news!
Alex and I adopted two cats!
After going to Animal Care and Control, we decided on two cats – both of them are Tortoiseshell cats. Licky is two-years-old (she was originally named Blinky) and Java is 5-months-old (she was originally named Mo). And October was buy-one-get-one-free for cats, so they both came to $20.00, and that includes all vaccination, licenses, mircochipping, and spaying.
We’re happy. :)

Since most people know already, I suppose I can divulge what all the “home stuff” is about. Our house is going into foreclosure. We’re on the hunt for someplace to rent. After my family gets settled, then I’m going to look into getting my own place. But, first thing is first: getting the family settled. It’s been extremely stressful.
School is the same. Spanish is still causing me pain. And to find out from an FAU advisor that Spanish I counts for naught…that I need Spanish II for my language requirements...oh God. Another semester of this, at a higher level...? Of course, I think there’s something fishy with this level two requirement, but it’s too much to go into here. Needless to say, I’ll be looking into this whole thing.
Stage Management has barely met. What is supposed to be a twice-a-week class has turned out to be a once-a-week class, and not for the whole class time. Drama for the Stage and Screen is Script Analysis all over again. I have to catch myself because I sometimes call it Script Analysis.
I saw an FAU academic advisor to go over what I need to graduate from FAU. All the fun overall credits needed minimums, upper credit classes, and non-degree classes, which I might make into a certificate program. I hope this doesn’t take forever. I simply won’t make it. On Tuesday we meet with the theatre dean to discuss all the theatre classes.
Alex and I saw Art at FAU. It was a final preview, so it was free. It was good, and from the looks/sounds of it, probably one of the better shows in years.
I’ve finally started my Wreck This Journal. It’s fun so far. I get to be messy...but of course, I keep it structured. And my Pyrex hunt still continues. I should really scale back..
I’m cooking a lot this weekend. Book club is tonight and I’m making baked apples. And, there’s a barbeque for the PBCC Players tomorrow and I’m making my spinach dip in the pumpernickel bread bowl and red bead salad.
Other than this mixture oo stuff, there's nothing new.

Since my last post I’ve started classes. The most challenging and work-oriented is Spanish. Even though I took a year in high school (and a year of what is now outdated sign language), it’s all new to me. I learned Spanish via a story in high school without learning the fundamentals, so I have no foundation in the language. Plus, my hearing is causing a huge problem. I’m missing a lot and I cannot hear the slight differences of letter-sounds and accents. The teacher is letting me use a tape recorder to tape the lesson, thankfully. I just need to dedicate time and concentrate hard, but I admit to shutting down a lot out of frustration. Luckily, Alex is putting up with it all and helping. :)
The other two classes, Stage Management and Drama on the Stage and Screen, are no biggie. Yet, anyway, but I don’t foresee anything major with them.
I’m back to working. I’m putting together budget proposals, writing letters to high schools, and helping with auditions. I really feel almost segregated this year from the PBCC Players. Last year I felt left out, mainly because I guess I wasn’t ready to leave it. Now, I’m ready to leave it, so I’m OK with being on the sideline in an almost advisor sense. I’ve outgrown it and I’m now there to help it grow for others.
I finished the huge chore of cleaning and purging my belongings – nearly 16 bags of items went to Goodwill! Alex and I have been thrifting a lot. The hunt for Pyrex and other Pyrex-related items is always fun. It’s a nice way to de-stress.

Alex and I went to Daytona Beach August 4th-7th. It was a much needed mini-vacation! We stayed at a really nice hotel that was across the street from the beach. It had wood floors, a mini fridge, and a microwave. We hit up a lot of thrift stores and antique mall/flea markets which only fueled my new collecting passion of Pyrex. The money we ended up saving on the room, free miniature golf, and going to non-paying tourist attractions we made for with buying thrifty items! I was extremely sad to come home, back to reality.
My contract for work is up until the 24th of this month, but I still work and accumulate hours. There’s not too much going on right now.
I’m set for my classes for the fall - Elementary Spanish I (PBCC), Drama for the Stage and Screen (FAU), and Stage Management (FAU). Hopefully financial aid will go through without a hitch. Hopefully...
I’ve been on a cleaning kick. Well, it’s more of a purging kick. I’ve gone through all my possessions in my bedroom and two closets (I have one bin of stuff left in the sunroom) and have donated so much stuff to Goodwill! Bags, bags, and more bags. It’s quite invigorating, actually, to be ridding myself of so many things. I don’t need them and there are people out there who can benefit by the clothing, purses, shoes, toys, and knick-knacks.
There’s a lot going on at home, involving both the home and family. I’m not going to get into it here. Life will be getting extremely hard and hectic through September and I’m worried about keeping up with home-life, school-life, and work-life.
Actually, no life at all. Or, perhaps, a new life, new chapter, new everything.

So my “vacation” is under way. This led me to getting a much needed haircut! Oh, thank goodness, because I couldn’t take it anymore. It had been about a year and a half. While it wasn’t thinned enough, I’m happy with the cut. My old stylist seems to have fallen off the planet, so I went to someone new. I don’t know if I’ll go back to her, though.
Alex and I have been having some nice days together. We went to the IKEA store and I want it all. It’s quite an amazing store, what with floors with rooms put together, merchandise, and a cafeteria! We also went to a science museum where I saw a turtle escape its pond.
My van broke down. I needed a new fuel pump and the radiator needed to be flushed and new coolant added to it. It came to $674.04. I was not at all happy. That was the last mechanical age-related breakdown possible. Everything is new, barring the engine, so I should be set until I at least pay the car off, which should be in about 9 months or so. Hopefully.
I have all my classes set at FAU and PBCC: Drama for the Stage and Screen, Stage Management, and Elementary Spanish I. I do not plan on being in any shows this semester. I need a break and must focus on my school work and just working.
Working over the summer is very boring. For what I need to do, I don’t need to go into the office, since it’s just typing on a computer. But, I fear that if I don’t show my face, they won’t believe that I’m actually working and won’t believe the hours on my time sheet.
I’ve begun the daunting task of cleaning my room and closets. I’m a pack rat, I admit it. I now must conquer it. I will, damn it!
My birthday was on July 31st. Alex came over for dinner and dessert (kielbasa, onions and green beans roasted in balsamic dressing, spinach dip with pumpernickel bread, and chocolate dump cake) and we watched Friends, played actors and actresses, and Uno. I got a birthday phone call from my Uncle Clyde and Aunt Joan (and a card from them) and a lot of birthday wishes on Facebook.
My Grandpa and Florence sent me a card and a $50.00 check, Diana sent me a card and got me homemade bar soap and bath oil, Laura got me a card and an I Love Lucy music box, Alex got me a card, Pride and Prejudice and Zombies, a 1911 edition of the complete works of William Shakespeare, and a reed diffuser kit, and my parents got me a card, a $30.00 Visa gift card for gasoline, a $10.00 gift card to PetSmart, and Wreck This Journal. Also, Alex took me out for a day of celebrating for the two of us for my birthday on August 1st. We went to some thrift stores and then his parents arranged for our meal to be on them at Carrabba’s! It was such a nice gift from them. It was a nice, mellow 24th birthday (gah, I’m 24!).
This Tuesday (through Thursday) Alex and I will be going to Daytona Beach! That’ll be our little vacation for the summer.

A Streetcar Named Desire is finally over! I cannot say I am sad. If anything, I am so relieved. I mean, I’m sure I will soon go through the “not doing a show!” withdrawal pains, but it certainly won’t be for that show. While it was sold out nearly every night, I felt nothing for it. Terrible, I know.
This weekend my body felt very draggy. I think it was finally just letting it all go and allowing itself to feel exhausted. I haven’t been sleeping well. I think I need to stay up late one night just to get everything back on track. I need to let myself go to sleep because I’m tired – not because I have a show the next day.
Last Sunday was one of Alex’s high school friend’s wedding. It was a summer wedding that was very laid-back and casual. It was the polar opposite of my two friends’ wedding. It was an enjoyable day and I wore a skirt!
Now that the show is over, all I have to focus on is work, but more importantly, the FAU stuffs. Starting tomorrow I shall be hounding whoever I need to so I can get into Drama for the Stage and Screen in time before add/drop time.
I also need to get some things done for myself: go to the ear doctor, get a haircut, and take my car in for some routine maintenance. And on the subject of my car, it hit 100,000 miles on the 14th!
I read an article about how if you use a credit card at a thrift store, you are more likely to get bad credit and lowered credit limits. Why? Because the credit card companies have concluded that if you are buying secondhand AND use a credit card, then you must be lacking funds and do not have cash. Maybe that’s true in some cases, but that is a huge, generalized assumption. I like saving money – that doesn’t mean I lack money. I enjoy bargain hunting and getting good deals, and secondhand is just as good as new, so why spend $30.00 on a pair of jeans when I can get it for $3.99? And what if you just don’t have cash on you that day and use a credit card? Or, like me, what if you don’t carry cash on you anymore? It doesn’t mean you’re a credit risk and you don’t have the money to pay for things. This is a monetary Big Brother scheme that I am annoyed and disgusted by.
So I’m now in the market for a SLR digital camera. My SLR film camera is no longer cost effective, what with the price of film development. Maybe I’ll trade it in towards another camera or maybe I’ll buy refurbished. I don’t know. This’ll take some time, money saving, and research.
I’ve made some more trades on Swaptree:
- Fahrenheit 451 by Ray Bradbury for Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End by T.T. Sutherland
- The Wild Girl by Jim Fergus for My Face to the Wind by Jim Murphy
- Principles of Environmental Science by William P. Cunningham for Friends: The One About the #1 Sitcom by Lauren Johnson
Imagine my delight and surprise that I was able to trade my old Environmental Conservation textbook!
I’ve finally been able to get some reading and movie watching done! Here’s what’s been going on:
Books (this list is only from the month of June to present) –
- Friends...'til the End: The One With All Ten Years by David Wild
- Filthy Shakespeare: Shakespeare's Most Outrageous Sexual Puns by Pauline Kiernan
- The Funny Thing Is... by Ellen DeGeneres
- The Glass Castle: A Memoir by Jeannette Walls
- The Reader by Bernhard Schlink
- Best of Friends: The Unofficial Friends Companion by Jae-Ha Kim
Movies (within the past month) –
- High Fidelity
- Infinity
- Little Shop of Horrors (1986)
- Get Smart
- Fever Pitch

I don’t really want anything for my birthday. I’m, once again, making the list of what I’ll ask for from my parents and what I’d never ask for from them –
What I’m asking for:
- Gasoline Gift Card
- PetSmart Gift Card
- Wreck This Journal by Keri Smith
What I’m not asking for:
- A digital camera (I’ve yet to really start looking for one I’d want because I know I’m not getting one anytime soon)
- Walmart Gift Card
- The Sims 3 or The Sims 3 – Collector’s Edition
- The Sims 3: Prima Official Game Guide by Catherine Browne
- The Poet’s Notebook by David Stanford Burr

Even though I've had stuff going on, I feel that nothing has been going on.
Since Alex was gone for July 4th rush, I took over stage managing “A Streetcar Named Desire,” but he’ll be back this week and I’ll go back to being assistant stage manager. It was stressful, on top of work. I dislike how this year's show was set up, but I won't be getting into it here. My contract for work was renewed for Summer B, after a nice range of confusing, unorganized events. PBCC is so stupid.
FAU is causing me trouble again. I go into Stage Management, but Drama for the Stage and Screen is full and the professor has yet to reply to my e-mail in which I asked to be added. I had him for a teacher last semester, so hopefully my good-standing as a student will compel him to add me to his class. Then, a few days ago I got an e-bill from FAU for the one class I enrolled in and it said I have no financial aid to cover it, even though I do! I e-mailed the woman who helped me with financial aid, and she's yet to respond back, either. Why does all this crap keep happening?!
I worked at the fireworks store on July 3rd and 4th. It was hectic and my lower body hates me. My legs and feet are in such pain and my hips went numb. But, I go to be with Alex for two days, so it was worth it.
I can't believe that I forgot to list the car in my car post I would REALLY want: 2009 Dodge Caliber in one of the blues and the basic, cheapest model.
I've made some trades on Swaptree:
- A Beautiful Mind by Sylvia Nasar for Lucky Man by Michael J. Fox
- Belly Laughs by Jenny McCarthy for Friends...'til the end by David Wild
- To the Lighthouse by Virginia Woolf for Tales of Terror and Detection by Edgar Allan Poe
- Life of Pi by Yann Martel for Best of Friends by Jae-Ha Kim
I suppose I should get onto thinking of my birthday wish list. Bleh.

So I've been thinking of life after my 1998 Ford Windstar. She's nearing 100,000 miles, but I still have a couple years of car payments left, so I wouldn't even think about getting another car until the payments are done (unless I need to do so out of necessity). But, I've still been looking at what I'd want - at least style-wise. I do know I want something with great MPG!

Let’s see what’s been going on...
- A Streetcar Named Desire is still going on. Yesterday was Alex’s last day of stage managing until he comes back after July 4th. So I’ll be taking over until then.
- Mom’s birthday was last weekend. It went nicely. Nothing major happened – played some double and triple solitaire, made her dinner and dessert, and that’s about it there.
- I’ve started a recipe blog. Here’s the link: http://recipesofmelissa.blogspot.co m/
- The Student Play Reading Series went so, so great! We had nearly a full house – boy were we not expecting that at all. We would’ve been happy with 20 people! It was really exciting to hear my words being read and then to see people laughing at Alex’s play, which I directed.
- In rather good and big news: I got financial aid at FAU! It’ll readjust itself once I enroll and start classes, but I got money to take classes! Up for grabs still is Theatre History I, Visual Imagination, Design Studio – Costume, Topics in Lighting Design, Stage Management, Interpretation of Drama (but we might not need this one since we took Dramatic Literature at PBCC, but the course ID’s don’t match), and Drama on Stage and Screen. I’d be most interested in Theatre History I, Stage Management, and Drama on Stage and Screen. But, we also need to take either Music Appreciation or Elementary Spanish I at PBCC. Ultimately, we need to talk to an academic advisor and our theatre advisor. The former about why it appears that some of our general education credits don’t seem to meet some requirements, and the latter as to why our theatre class course ID’s don’t match FAU’s, and if they indeed will transfer.
